Recycling
Innovation, investment, a commitment to engage with policy-makers and gearing our on and off site operations to maximise the recovery of materials has established us as a market leader in construction and demolition waste recycling.Construction and demolition waste is the largest waste stream in the UK but is also increasingly used to supply material to the construction industry. The M6 Toll Road is just one example of our secondary aggregate recycled from and re-incorporated into local regeneration projects.
Some of the key drivers for change in recent years’ have been:
- Landfill Directive, which was adopted in the UK as the Landfill Regulations 2002, is increasing the cost of waste disposal.
- ‘Aggregates Levy’ has introduced a price differential in favour of secondary aggregates and is funding agencies such as the Waste Resource Action Programme (WRAP).
- Demolition Protocol is influencing national and local planning authorities to increase the use of secondary aggregates in new build projects.
- Mineral Planning Guidance – Note 6 has proposed a reduction is the use of primary aggregates in favour of recycled or secondary materials
- Construction Products Directive now allows for the specification of secondary aggregates on a par with primary aggregates in a number of concrete applications.
