Listed Grade I City Centre Structure

We were selected to carry out extensive soft stripping and structural alterations to this historic building.

English Heritage were very interested in our proposals for the management and execution of a scheme which was carried out in a manner in keeping with the structure, not in keeping with demolition!

Our work comprised the removal of two 600mm thick 1500 tonne cantilevered balconies without vibration or percussive methods, working directly between hand painted gold leaf ceilings above a timber floor of great historical importance.

To achieve this we developed a unique remote controlled excavator equipped with a rotating concrete cracker designed to remove the operator from the work-face and eliminate whole body vibration.

A complex temporary works structure was designed and constructed forming an integral part of the demolition method to, support the balconies during removal and, protect the items of historical importance.

Working with our Client under severe budgetary constraints and to a demanding programme, we re-sequenced the project and re-programmed work reducing time on site by 25%. This allowed integration of follow on trades in week 5, rather than following completion of our works.
