Walsgrave Hospital

This 3.3million pound demolition of the existing hospital was undertaken to make way for the new staff and public car park, adjacent to the newly constructed Walsgrave Hospital carried out by our client Skanska Coventry JV.

We carried out asbestos removal and demolition of numerous buildings including the seven storey Women’s & Children’s Block; three storey Energy Centre; 50m high chimney; seven storey Acute Building, as well as the infrastructure roads and bridge.

We managed three specialist asbestos contractors, to enable us to clear all the buildings (including the network of underground tunnels) of the notifiable asbestos, so we could meet the tight contract programme.

We mobilised three Ultra High Reach Excavators (60 to 110 tonnes) to demolish the main Acute building, one machine working on different elements of the facade. A further 15 excavators and 2 mobile crushing crews completed the Coleman taskforce to remove the sub structures and then process and recycle the demolition arisings.

98,000 tonnes of concrete were recycled and re-used on site within the enabling works for the final phase of Skanska’s construction.
