The Lyng
Working for Urban Design, in partnership with Sandwell MBC demolition engineers department, work on the Lyng Estate has been an integral part of the regeneration of West Bromwich town centre, which in recent years has seen significant investment in delivering improved local housing and community facilities. We were engaged to demolish, using mechanical and explosive techniques, the estates housing stock in excess of 3000 units. The properties were predominantly a mix of houses and maisonettes, but also included two nine story and three seventeen story tower blocks.
Our demolition programme culminated with the spectacular, simultaneous, explosive demolition of the three seventeen story tower blocks, Caldwell House, St Johns House and Willis House. This was 3.8 seconds that dramatically changed the town centre skyline forever.
Both Sandwell MBC and Coleman & Company are committed to supporting the national sustainability agenda, under the terms of our four year partnering contract.
Concrete arising from the demolition work were crushed on-site, which reduced our environmental impact and vehicle movements and in-consequence lowered project costs and emissions.
This cost effective secondary aggregate was then used in the construction of the nearby M6 Toll Road scheme.
