Nechells Gas Holders

The Gas Holders in Aston Birmingham, were a synonymous landmark for the city when driving North on the M6.

This project enabled us to extend our experience within the field of industrial demolition. We successfully completed the removal of two, 100 year old, gas holders weighing some 5000 tonnes of structural steel, within the live confines of a city centre gas storage site. Many hazards, risks and safety considerations had to be overcome before the Client, Second Site Properties, were satisfied with the proposed method for executing the work.

Dismantling such large industrial structures’, with no available working space except for that within the circumference of the holders, posed many challenges to our temporary works engineers.

A specialist decontamination team was employed to remove gas waste residue, built up over the life of the holders. Specialist burning team were continually monitored under our occupational health policy as they removed the internal steelwork to facilitate access for Extended Reach Plant that was equipped with steel shears. The heavy craneage carefully removed each element in a methodically planned and sequenced manner, to complete the demolition.
