The judges praised Coleman & Company’s entry for providing “excellent detailed references, backing up exactly what it was saying”.
The company has invested heavily in improving its business, as it seeks to meet its objectives of improving the working environment, developing a unique recycling facility and reducing working at height and whole-body vibration.
The company has also invested £6m to develop a 2.4ha site in Birmingham and construct offices equipped with modern IT systems, a workshop and specialist recycling washing plant.
The recycling plant is the first of its kind in the UK and has been developed to wash waste and to sort a variety of sands and gravels.
In its new workshop Coleman and Company now houses heavy craneage, exhaust extraction and facilities to help maintain its fleet of plant and transport.
With its ability to adapt to changes on site at the last minute, Coleman and Company was able to provide a successful controlled explosive demolition of a 20-storey tower block in Birmingham, after getting the go-ahead just four days before the official blow-down date.
Engineers worked 24 hours a day, charging the building wit explosives under what is classed as “extreme conditions”.
On another £1m project for enabling works on the Grade 1 listed Birmingham Town Hall building, Coleman and Company constructed a temporary deck to support its remote-controlled plant. This helped to prevent exposure to workers and eliminate the risks of whole-body vibration.
Preparation for the works – which involved the removal of 1,500ft of reinforced concrete, 600mm in thickness, from two galleries – took 10 months.
Its forward-thinking approach has helped the company to secure its largest contract yet, a £16m deal partnering arrangement with Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council.
